Focus on Freesia

Every so often we like to focus and spend more time studying an individual flower that we use on a regular basis within our constantly changing catalogue of bouquets. This week we would like to look more closely at Freesia.

A few interesting facts on Freesia:

The actual flower was named after a Dr Friedrich Heinrich Theodor Freese, a German
Physician.

According to the F&PA, freesia is among the most popular and widely grown cut flowers in the world, with over 110 million stems sold in the UK each year.

In a survey carried out by The Flowers & Plants Association over half the respondents rated them as one of their favourite flowers.

Freesia is available all year round but the peak season is spring.

Freesia originated in South Africa and were first imported to Europe at the end of the 19th century.

Freesia comes in a variety of colours including yellow, red, pink and white.

Freesia belong to the Iridaceae family, including iris

When buying freesia look for at least one flower open on the stem, make sure they have plenty of
water and never let the stem ends dry out. Make time to pinch out the top most buds and remove the old flower heads to encourage new ones to open.

Endeavour to keep away from fruit, vegetables, and excess heat, as they are very sensitive to the ethylene gas produced.

With regards to scent unlike most other flowers, where the white forms smell most
strongly, if you want highly scented freesia always go for the pink or red varieties.

Finally, freesia represents innocence and makes the perfect and appropriate gift for the proud parents of a newborn child.

One of my favourite varieties is "Ballerina" which always reminds me of a string of elegant dancers, don't ask me why!

Autumn in the Countryside

Autumn is a great time of year for walking in the UK. The landscape
takes on a new and more dynamic appearance as the leaves change
colour and fall gently from the trees. Get out and enjoy yourself on
foot! The days may be getting shorter and colder, but don't despair -
autumn's leaves of reds and golds mean it's a glorious time to
explore Britain's countryside.

Even if you live in the most built up area, you may be surprised to
find how many footpaths there are crossing areas of disused land,
following stream banks, canals or quiet lanes. Almost any walk which
passes small areas of woodland, unmanaged grassland, hedgerows and
particularly wetland such as streams and ponds, can provide a wealth
of flower, plant and animal life for the walker and microscopist.

During your walk look out for one of the my favourite flowers the
familiar Michaelmas Daisy (Aster novi-belgii) with it's purple daisy-
like heads. They should still be in flower on roadside verges, and
provides the opportunity to examine the structure of the flower head.
The flower head is not one flower, but a composite of many small
flowers or florets. It's worth taking a Michaelmas Daisy flower head
back with you to dissect and examine. Your local library should have
a number of books on wild flowers and botany which can explain the
structure of these and other flowers.

If you just can't manage to get out for a walk or really can't be
bothered then why not brighten up the day by just staying at your
computer, click on to our Autumn Range and treat yourself,
friend or relative to a spectacular Clare Florist Autumn bouquet.

What was that saying again?........let your fingers do the walking!

National chocolate week

Did you know that next week is National chocolate week?

To be honest I am a chocoholic, it's the one thing I know for sure I couldn't give up!
For sure I definitely don't need a reason to eat some but was really interested reading through all the different events that are taking place over the country.

It got us all talking at work about our favourite chocolate - here's all our different favourites:
Kerryanne - Bournville or any dark chocolate
Claire - Galaxy Caramel
Polly -  Thorntons Eden
Robin - Chocolate Liquer
Carole - Creme Eggs - but only at Easter time!
Nora - Fruit and Nut
Brian - Chocolate digestives
Millie - Mars Bar
Barry - Cherry brandy liquers
Ged - Kit Kat
Dave - Doesn't eat chocolate !!!!!!

Some of those links go to Wikipedia of which there are some really interesting facts and figures, it's amazing the quantity and money we all spend on chocoate.

It also got us talking about chocolate themed flowers of which there are only a couple.
Choco Anthurium and Chocolate Cosmos Plant - if you know of any others be sure to us know, drop us a line at designers@clareflorist.co.uk

You can also add a box of Thorntons continental chocolate's to any of our Autumn Range and have them delivered anywhere in the UK.
