Are Flowers Relevant?

I like to browse through flower related compositions,  blogs and web sites,  searching for articles of interest to digest and comment  on.  There is so much information available to us,  that at times it can be a bit overwhelming.  Whether looking for information on floristry, flower meaningsflower delivery, the latest designs of flower bouquets or flower trends, there is sure to be plenty of articles of interest to satisfy the keenest of flower enthusiasts.

Here is a short list of some of the best informative blogs and sites I have come across that I would like to share with you:

Recommended Blogs to follow, read, peruse and enjoy:

  1. Planet Flowers Blog
  2. Simply Flowers Blog
  3. Gardeners World Blog
  4. Frary's Fresh Flowers Blog
  5. Only Flora Blog

Wonderful Websites for you to look at:

  1. About Flowers
  2. Garden Guides
  3. Flower Experts
  4. The BBC - Nature - Flowers
  5. Floral Craft Resource

And so,  Are flowers still relevant?

Of course they are!  We all love flowers and the feelings that they evoke,  their shapes,  colours and scents,  the way that flowers are used for so many occasions and celebrations,  to say thank you and sorry. To commiserate and show sympathy and to congratulate.  Flowers today are as popular as they ever have been and these wonderfully inspirational blogs,  articles and web sites just go to show that the spirit and the powers of flowers is blooming.

I hope you find them as interesting and enjoyable to read as I have.

October Flowers and Prizewinners

Twitter-winner-oct-2010-mum

 October Prizewinner:

Firstly congratulations to our October,  second Tuesday of the month twitter #randomfollower prizewinner:  Jackie from Lancs.  Who very kindly had her winning bespoke bouquet sent to her mum.   Here she is with her prize (and a very cute dog).   Well done Jackie - and your Mum too!

Marigold

 October Flowers:

The Birth flower for October is the marigold (or Calendula).

The flower meaning of the October birth flower - the marigold;   is sorrow or sympathy and the colours for the October birth month flowers should be Yellow or white.

Birth month flowers are usually the specific flowers that are traditionally given to a person the month that person is born.

The Marigold's flower meaning is "winning grace."   Once considered the most sacred of flowers,   in India it was placed around the necks of holy statues.

The Marigold is found through Europe, the United States, and western Asia.  Marigolds are good cleansers and can be used as remedies for bee stings and can be used by cooks as a spicy seasoning or colouring for food.

Other Interesting Uses for flowers...

We all know how wonderful flowers are; as gifts, to brighten a room, to celebrate a certain occasion, to evoke a special memory and even to eat - by jazzing up a plate of food.

For hundreds of years the healing proprieties of flowers and plants have been exploited in herbalism, naturopathy and homoeopathic remedies.

These medicinal properties of flowers and plants are usually consumed in the form of a flower tea, or mixed and made into a compress or poultice (applied externally) or are made into an essence or oil which can be heated for it's vapour or used externally.

Here are a few examples of flower types and their medicinal benifits:

  Dried_chrysanthemum_flowers

Chrysanthemum - Can be used to cure colds, fevers, headaches, eye inflammations and hypertensions.   Good to drink in hot summer weather.

Pink_rose Rose -  The petals can be used for cooling, blood circulating and anti-depressive.

Tiger_lily_bulb

Tiger Lily - The bulbs are used to treat insomnia.

For some more information on medicinal flowers then take a look here:

When utilising flowers or plants as natural remedy's it is always very important to seek professional advice before use especially if the remedy is to be consumed orally.

Qixi Festival - 16th August 2010 - Chinese Valentine's Day

Qixi Festival picThe Team at Clare Florist would like to wish all our friends, followers and customers a happy Qixi Festival.

Qixi is the Chinese romantic festival, like the western tradition of Valentine's Day. It falls on the 7th day of  the 7th lunar month, this year being the 16th August.

The story goes:

A young cowherd named Niulang, came across seven fairy sisters bathing in a lake. Encouraged by his mischievous companion the ox, he stole their clothes and waited to see what would happen.

Q The fairy sisters elected the youngest and most beautiful sister Zhinü "the weaver girl", to retrieve their clothing. She agreed to do so, but since Niulang had seen her naked, she agreed to his request for marriage. She proved to be a wonderful wife, and Niulang to be a good husband. They lived happily and had two children. But the Goddess of Heaven found out that Zhinü, a fairy girl, had married a mere mortal. The Goddess was furious and ordered Zhinü to return to heaven. On Earth, Niulang was very upset that his wife had disappeared. Suddenly, his ox began to talk, telling him that if he killed it and put on its hide, he would be able to go up to Heaven to find his wife. Crying bitterly, he killed the ox, put on the skin, and carried his two beloved children off to Heaven to find Zhinü. The Goddess discovered this and was very angry. Taking out her hairpin, the Goddess scratched a wide river in the sky to separate the two lovers forever, thus forming the Milky Way between Altair and Vega. Zhinü must sit forever on one side of the river, sadly weaving on her loom, while Niulang watches her from afar and takes care of their two children

Qixi image But once a year all the magpies in the world would take pity on them and fly up into heaven to form a bridge over the star Deneb in the Cygnus constellation so the lovers may be together for a single night, which is the seventh night of the seventh moon.

We are excited to celebrate Qixi and have a wonderful array of romantic flowers, Tiger lilies and Oriental orchids to offer you; ensuring that your celebrations go the way of the two lovers, bridging the gaps that life sometimes throws at us.
